Overview
Malaysia's east coast islands, including the Perhentians, Redang and Tioman, offer calm, easy island diving with turtles, healthy reefs and resorts a few steps from the water. They are a good choice for newer divers and for anyone who wants a relaxed beach holiday with a few dives each day.
Most of the diving is gentle, with mild currents and shallow reefs. Open Water divers are well catered for, and many resorts have their own dive centres.
The most important thing to know is the northeast monsoon. From roughly November to February, rough seas close most resorts, dive shops and ferries on these islands. Some places close as early as October and others reopen only in March, so check with the specific resort before you book a shoulder-season trip.
The best time to visit is April to September, when the sea is calm and visibility is at its best. Water temperature stays between about 27 and 30°C. The islands are reached by boat from jetties on the mainland, and services run only in season.
