Overview

Great Barrier Reef liveaboards leave from Cairns and range from two-night trips on the outer reef to seven-night trips that reach the Ribbon Reefs and Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea. Several longer trips use a light-aircraft flight between Cairns and Lizard Island, so guests can join or leave partway along the route.

Shorter trips suit newer divers who want more dives than a day boat offers. The Ribbon Reefs, with the Cod Hole and Steve's Bommie, are open to Open Water divers with some logged dives. Osprey Reef is remote and deep, and operators aim those trips at Advanced divers. Fares typically range from about USD 375 to 680 per night in 2026 listings, with reef and fuel levies on top.

Getting to the boat

  • CairnsMain liveaboard port. Most trips leave from Cairns, and some Ribbon Reefs and Coral Sea trips include a light-aircraft flight between Cairns and Lizard Island.
  • Lizard IslandChangeover point for Spirit of Freedom and Mike Ball trips, reached by a scenic flight of about one hour from Cairns.

Who can go

Open Water divers can join short outer-reef trips and the Spirit of Freedom 3-night Ribbon Reefs trip, which asks for at least 10 ocean dives with 5 in the last 12 months. The 4-night Coral Sea trip to Osprey Reef is aimed at Advanced divers or those with at least 20 ocean dives. The 3-night trip runs on a buddy-team basis without full guiding, so divers need to be comfortable planning their own dives.

Open Water friendly. Remote northern reefs on liveaboards suit more experienced divers.
